Council Tax on Vacant Properties

Council Tax on Vacant Properties

From 1st April 2016 discounts for empty properties within the boundaries of Liverpool City Council that are either furnished or unfurnished have been withdrawn. Properties which remain empty and unfurnished for two years will be charged an additional 50 per cent Empty Property Premium.

Therefore, where a property is vacant and there is no tenancy in existence, the Council Tax Liability falls with the landlord, who, as the owner will be responsible for paying the Council. Tax during the "void" period.

If your property is within the borough of Knowsley then you will not be charged council tax for the first month it is vacant and St Helens Council offer a 25% discount on unfurnished properties that are vacant for up to six months.
